The Alaska Reads Act directs the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) to establish a reading program to provide direct support for and intervention services for the lowest-performing 25% of schools. Reading specialists on DEED staff will coach, train, and mentor teachers and school staff. Additionally, reading specialists will help create specific improvement goals for each school selected.
