The Alaska Reads Act

Early Education Programs

The Alaska Reads Act directs the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) to establish an early education grant program. This program, the District-Wide Early Education Program, is designed to provide resources to districts that are not adequately served by head start programs and other high-quality childcare.

This program is voluntary, and grant funds can be used to either develop a Pre-K program in a district where none exists, or to expand and improve an existing program. Up to $3 million will be awarded to districts each year.

DEED will rank the performance of each district and will prioritize eligible districts with lowest performance.

The Parents as Teachers program is for children who are younger than 5-years-old. The program provides an early childhood education that is evidence-based and involves parents. It is meant to enhance school readiness and increase parental involvement. DEED partners with the Department of Health to administer this program.
